“The film Dérives Alpines takes as its starting point the shift in how the Alps are perceived due to climate change. Once viewed on a so-called timeless scale—that of geological time—the high mountains are undergoing changes that bring them into the realm of human time (a few decades). The mountain colossus reveals a fragile foundation, an inherent weakness in its composition that contrasts with the idealized image of an unchanging mountain.”

In collective imagination, mountains embody power, grandeur, and strength. However, their structure results from an intricate web of rocky elements bound by permafrost (a thermal state of soil below 0°C). Due to increasing heatwaves, this Alpine "cement" is warming, creating instability at the very core of the mountains. Rockfalls are becoming more frequent and dramatic as a result...

Dérives Alpines is part of Capucine Vever's ongoing cinematic exploration of landscape perception and the social and cultural constructs we project onto them.
